| About Us
Our Vision
To provide Adult Literacy Basic education at a local level
which is relevant and unique to meet the diverse needs of
our community, so empowering its citizens.
As a not-for-profit community organisation, the Outer Eastern
Literacy Program has been helping adults achieve their literacy
goals for the past 25 years. People have been helped to open
a new world of opportunities.
Our history is full of wonderful examples of adults from all
walks of life who have attended our programs, enhanced their
lives and made new friends. They have benefited from taking
the first step towards a whole new way of being in the world,
by enrolling in one of our programs.
If you are looking for affordable help with literacy for yourself
or for a friend, we offer a range of general literacy, Road
Rules, English as a Second Language, writing skills and maths
skills programs specifically designed to meet the needs of
adult learners. Our programs allow you to learn at your own
pace in a friendly and supportive environment. We are conveniently
located at Boronia Library which is within walking distance
of trains and buses. Our library location provides access
to all the library services including the internet. It also
provides a carpark and wheelchair access. Classes are also
held at Emerald Community House and Kallista Community House.

Our Aims
- To assess without discrimination the literacy
needs of adult members of the community who voluntarily
approach the OELP for assistance, and recommend a course
of action.
- To provide a mutually agreed course of tuition
aimed at improving the literacy competence of students of
the OELP.
To train volunteers who provide literacy and numeracy tuition
to students of the Program.
- To develop and provide support, services
and facilities for the tutors of the Program.
To liaise with other groups with similar aims and objectives.
Staff
- Our coordinator conducts confidential
individual literacy assessments to assist participants to
decide what their literacy training needs are, and which
of our programs will best suit their specific needs.
- We have a team of qualified and experienced
sessional group tutors who work with participants to create
a comfortable and friendly learning environment.
- Our trained volunteers offer 1:1 tuition, should
this type of learning be more appropriate.
Incorporation and Management
The Outer Eastern Literacy program is incorporated under the
Associations Incorporation Act. We are managed by a Committee
of Management, elected from our members each year.
Volunteers
The OELP has a pool of trained Volunteer Adult Literacy Tutors
who provide
literacy tuition to adult students on a 1:1 basis. Tutors
make a commitment to work with a student for two hours each
week. This work is invaluable as it provides another option
for students who find it difficult to progress in mainstream
classes. The initial Volunteer Tutor Training is provided
by the OELP as is ongoing support and professional development
opportunities.
